Mohamed Nasheed, the President of Maldives, reiterates his country’s strong commitment to and support for the Commonwealth

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma met Mohamed Nasheed, the President of Maldives, at Commonwealth headquarters in London today, Thursday, 2 December.

The two discussed developments in Maldives, the consolidation of that country’s democratic transition, and the ways in which the Commonwealth can support the building of capacity and enhance the smooth functioning in the judiciary, the legislature and the executive.

They also discussed how the Commonwealth can help Maldives to access the necessary finance to become a carbon-neutral economy by 2020.

At the half-way point between the last meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government (Port of Spain, November 2009) and the next (Perth, October 2011), the two also discussed ongoing Commonwealth work in response to leaders’ mandates, including the work of the Eminent Persons Group looking at how to strengthen Commonwealth impact, networks and profiles, and the review of the scope of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group to promote and defend Commonwealth values. The President reiterated his country’s strong commitment to and support for the Commonwealth.
