Secretary-General to sign Joint Declaration on enhanced co-operation and partnership on human rights
Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma will address the High-Level Segment of the UN Human Rights Council’s 13th Session in Geneva, Switzerland, on 1 March 2010 during his two-day visit to the country.
In his speech, the Secretary-General will emphasise the importance the Commonwealth attaches to the protection and promotion of human rights, which lie at the foundation of the core values and principles of the Commonwealth.

The Secretary-General will also sign a Joint Declaration with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay to enhance co-operation and partnership on human rights. The declaration focuses on deepening links, undertaking shared activities and pooling resources including on the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council, supporting ratifications and implementation of international human rights instruments, and strengthening national human rights institutions.
Speaking ahead of his visit, the Secretary-General said: “This partnership will strengthen our efforts to protect and promote human rights across the Commonwealth. Human rights are basic and fundamental values, yet they may appear to be the loftiest of ideals to be attained. They are universal and indivisible, and the Commonwealth is committed to making these real for our 2 billion people.”
While in Geneva, the Secretary-General will also deliver a talk at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies on 'The Commonwealth and Global Challenges'.
