Improving trade flows in East Africa

17 March 2009

Participants exchanged ideas on improving the business environment in the region

Participants from the Commonwealth East African countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda met in Nairobi from 10 to 13 March 2009 to discuss ways of improving the flow of trade within the region.

The seminar, ‘Improving trade flows into and from the East African Community’, was organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat and took place at the Kenyan capital’s Laico Regency Hotel.

Isaac Njoroge, a trade adviser at the Secretariat, explained that the objective of the workshop was “to kick start the process of delivering the ‘Improvement of Trade Flows within the East African Community’ project.”

Mr Njoroge said the delegates exchanged ideas on improving the business environment in the region, creation of a framework for forging synergies across sectors, capacity-building within the regional trade support institutions, and enhancing regional public-private sector dialogue and partnerships.

Participants included senior officials from the three governments, private sector representatives from the region, as well as representatives from the East African Community Secretariat and the East African Business Council.
