He discussed the importance of universities in propagating the right values of global governance

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma was invited as the Chief Guest at a Dinner to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Charter given by King Edward VII to establish Queen’s University, Belfast.

Mr Sharma addressed some 350 people at the event in Northern Ireland, UK, and spoke about the importance of universities in propagating the right values of global governance, and sensitising young people to global challenges.

He discussed the possibilities for collaboration between the Commonwealth and the universities, as value-based organisations. The Secretary-General also mapped out the main directions of Commonwealth activities present and future.

At the event, the poet Seamus Heaney, Nobel laureate and a graduate of Queen’s, was also honoured.
