A three-day workshop on developing the private sector strategy for Zanzibar and Pemba ended on 24 October 2008 in Zanzibar.
The workshop which started on 22 October drew participants from government and the private sector and was the first but very important step towards a consultative process that will ultimately lead to a strategy that can be jointly implemented by the government and the private sector.
“The main goal of a private sector development strategy is to stimulate the development and growth of the private sector,” said Isaac Njoroge, an adviser with the Commonwealth Secretariat who is managing the project.
“This can only happen when certain parameters are present. At the base are the basic competitiveness requirements which include a well laid infrastructure, effective institutions, a stable macroeconomic environment and a knowledgeable workforce.”
The Islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, which form part of the United Republic of Tanzania, are currently discussing a draft export development strategy that has been produced with the technical assistance of the Secretariat, and the private sector development strategy is one of the instruments that will lead to its successful implementation.
