Second winner of prestigious prize lauded for achievements in promoting good governance in Africa

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has warmly congratulated former Botswana President Festus Mogae, who has been awarded the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.

"The Commonwealth is proud that the winner of this prestigious prize is again an outstanding leader from one of our member countries," said Mr Sharma.

"I laud Mr Mogae for his leadership, particularly in further strengthening democratic practice in Botswana, to the admiration of all on the continent. He brought his leadership skills to bear in building a transparent and accountable administration, which formed the foundation in promoting sustainable development, upholding good governance, and bringing about robust economic growth in Botswana."

Mr Sharma continued: "I am proud that Botswana, along with five other Commonwealth member states, ranks in the top ten on the 2008 Ibrahim Index of African Governance. Good governance is the bedrock upon which the mutually reinforcing ideals of development and democracy will thrive". He expressed the hope that this Award will continue to encourage the leaders of the African continent to embrace these fundamental principles.

Former President Mogae stepped down from office on 31 March 2008, after serving two terms in office. He becomes the second Commonwealth leader to win the prize, following former Mozambique President Joaquim Chissano's winning of the inaugural prize last year.
