Tuiloma Neroni Slade meets Commonwealth Secretary-General at Marlborough House

The Secretary-General Designate of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, called on Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma in London, UK, on 18 September 2008.

Mr Slade was accompanied by the Acting Forum Secretary-General, Feleti P Teo, and the Director of the Political and Security Programme, Andie Fong Toy.

In the meeting which took place at the Commonwealth Secretariat, both Mr Slade and Mr Sharma discussed Pacific issues, including the situation in Fiji Islands.

Pacific Islands Forum

The forum comprises 16 independent and self-governing states in the Pacific and is the region’s premier political and economic policy organisation.

They also exchanged views on the proposed establishment of a Commonwealth Small States Office in Geneva, and the establishment of a Commonwealth office in the Pacific region to deliver new governance projects in support of the Pacific Plan.

Discussions also touched on the history of meetings between the Secretaries-General of the Caribbean Community, the Pacific Islands Forum, Indian Ocean Community and the Commonwealth. Mr Sharma and Mr Slade agreed that there continued to be value in exchanges of this kind which promote collaboration between organisations that are focused on supporting small states.
