Pakistan values its Commonwealth membership and is firmly committed to upholding the democratic principles of the association
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that his government greatly valued its Commonwealth membership and was firmly committed to upholding the democratic principles of the Commonwealth.
During a meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Kamalesh Sharma, in London, UK, on 25 July 2008, Mr Qureshi said that following the elections held on 18 February the new Government of Pakistan was upholding the established Commonwealth principles of democracy including freedom of speech and expression.
He added that Pakistan was keen to play an active role and contribute more effectively to the Commonwealth. The Secretary-General said that Commonwealth experience and expertise was available for the Government of Pakistan in various areas of governance. Mr Sharma also accepted with pleasure an invitation from the Pakistan Foreign Minister to visit Pakistan at a mutually convenient time.
