Secretary-General holds talks with Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Marlborough House

Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma met Kenya’s Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, at Marlborough House in London on 22 July 2008 and pledged the Commonwealth’s support for reforms in the East African nation.

Mr Sharma said the Commonwealth was ready to assist Kenya in areas in which it had proven expertise and competence – such as constitutional and electoral reforms and in other areas of governance.

Mr Odinga said Kenya had turned the corner after unrest at the start of the year and the message he now carried to the world was that Kenya was ready again for business and investment.

The Secretary-General also briefed Mr Odinga on the Marlborough House Statement on the Reform of International Institutions, which will be among the issues to be discussed by Commonwealth leaders at a meeting in New York in September.
