Talks focus on youth development in the Commonwealth
Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Rais Yatim called on Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma on 15 July 2008.
During their meeting at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, UK, they discussed the Commonwealth Youth Programme and Malaysia’s support for youth development.
The Foreign Minister said Malaysia is prepared to play a role in promoting greater interaction among young people, particularly in Commonwealth Asia. He also stressed the importance of enhancing cultural ties among young people in the Commonwealth to promote understanding.
The Secretary-General briefed Dato’ Rais on the upcoming meeting of Commonwealth leaders on the eve of the United Nations High-Level meeting on the state of implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in New York, to further discuss the issue of the reform of international institutions and environmental governance, as well as the MDGs. They also discussed the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting to be held in New York, as well as the meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, of which Dato’ Rais is Chairperson.
