Sir Paul Reeves on visit to Fiji Islands

1 July 2008

The Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Special Representative to Fiji Islands, Sir Paul Reeves, is visiting the country from 1 to 5 July 2008.

Sir Paul’s visit is part of the Commonwealth’s ongoing engagement and commitment to assist Fiji in its efforts to return to full constitutional and civilian democracy. The visit by Sir Paul is in response to a request to the Secretary-General from President Ratu Josefa Iloilo Uluivuida.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma stated the primary objective of Sir Paul’s visit is to discuss with the interim government and other key political stakeholders in Fiji how best to organise the proposed ‘President’s Forum’.

“In order to promote understanding, reconciliation, and a shared vision for Fiji’s future, the Forum needs to be an inclusive environment in which broad political dialogue can be promoted and specific proposals such as electoral reform can be discussed,” said the Secretary-General.

“Sir Paul’s visit will be consultative and aimed at encouraging wide participation and confidence in the President’s Forum.”

Mr Sharma confirmed that relevant officials in the Commonwealth Secretariat and their counterparts in the United Nations continue to explore how they can collaborate in assisting Fiji to return to full constitutional and civilian democracy.

The Secretary-General also commented on the recent announcement by Fiji’s interim government of its withdrawal from the Pacific Islands Forum Joint Working Group process.

“This is unfortunate. It is vital for the interim government to remain engaged with the Pacific Islands Forum and its efforts to support Fiji. The Commonwealth and other members of the international community will continue to support the Pacific Islands Forum in its initiatives to assist Fiji Islands. It is Fiji’s neighbours that are best placed to work collectively through the Forum in support of Fiji and its future,” said Mr Sharma.
