The Commonwealth Secretariat is assisting the government of Samoa to improve its export base by developing a national export strategy.
To achieve this, a one week retreat for senior government and private sector officials and representatives from the private sector is taking place in the country’s capital Apia, from 19 to 21 May 2008.
Mr Isaac Njoroge, a Trade adviser with the Commonwealth Secretariat who is managing the project and will be facilitating the retreat said that the overall objective of the strategy is “to improve the competitiveness of Samoan goods and services in international markets.”
Mr Njoroge said that the strategy is one of the initiatives that the Samoan government is using towards the achievement of the country’s vision of “Improved Quality of Life for All” as contained in the country’s current development plan, “Strategy for the development of Samoa,2008-2012”.
Among the sectors being prioritised include: tourism, agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing and sports.
During the retreat, key cross cutting strategies will also be discussed, including trade finance, quality management, export packaging, competence development and trade information.
The outcomes of this retreat will be presented in a larger national symposium on Friday 23 May 2008.
