The Commonwealth Secretariat has organised a two-day meeting for permanent representatives of member countries based at the United Nations in New York to agree a common position before participating at a major forthcoming UN forum.
Ahead of the 30 June to 1 July UN Development Cooperation Forum (UNDCF) meeting, a body created in 2005 to promote international development cooperation activities, envoys from Commonwealth countries will meet to on 22 and 23 May 2008 in New York to sensitise themselves about issues related to the mandates and role of UNDCF and provide a political impetus to strengthen the forum’s effectiveness.
Mr Matthew Odedokun, an economic adviser with the Commonwealth Secretariat who is coordinating the New York meeting said that “we would like to provide the envoys with an opportunity to share experiences and develop a harmonised position with regard to their expectations from UNDCF.”
“The outcome of the meeting will guide not only the Secretariat in its advocacy work, but would also provide a basis for the Permanent Representatives to formulate their national positions on the UNDCF and strengthen their effectiveness while participating in other international fora,” Mr Odedokun added.
