New stamp launched to mark Youth Meeting
Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma on 26 April 2008 arrived in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, where he met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at his official residence, Temple Trees.
During his visit, a commemorative stamp marking the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting (CYMM) was launched.
The five Rupee stamp depicts two young people releasing a white dove, symbolising ‘Youth and Peace-building’, the theme of the 7th CYMM beginning 27 April in the capital.
Mr Sharma held talks with President Rajapaksa, and discussed the ministerial meeting as well as ongoing matters of Commonwealth interest. In particular, they discussed the implementation of the report of the Commonwealth Commission on Respect and Understanding, 'Civil Paths to Peace', which has an important bearing on young people.
The report sees the role of young people – as well as that of women, education and the media – as a key factor in the building and strengthening of harmonious communities.
