Commonwealth seminar marks first in-country training in public sector restructuring

A Commonwealth seminar on Performance Management and Leadership of Reform for senior public sector executives will be held in Niue from 3 to 5 March 2008.

The event has attracted participants from organisations from across the Niue public service. It is a collaboration of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management and the Niue Prime Minister’s Department. The seminar is designed to build the capacity of institutions in implementing public sector reform by training their senior executives in performance management and effective leadership.

John Wilkins, Public Sector Management Adviser at the Commonwealth Secretariat, who will be one of the facilitators at the seminar said: “We are responding to the priority needs of the Niue Government to construct a strategic framework to develop performance management systems that will enable policies to cascade through departments to individuals.”

This programme will look not only at global trends in strategic human resource management but will also examine ethics and values, and the challenges of improving efficiency and relations in the workplace,” he added.

Mr Wilkins said the seminar aims to advance good governance by strengthening accountability as part of effective performance management in the public service.

This is the first in a series of in-country seminars on priority issues in public sector reform to be rolled out in Commonwealth Pacific countries.
