The Commonwealth Secretariat is working with Book Aid International to increase access to development publications

For the last two years, the Commonwealth Secretariat has been involved in a project which aims to deliver books on development issues to those who need them most.

Book Aid International runs the ‘Books for Development’ project in partnership with six development publishers including the Secretariat, Oxfam Publishing and the Overseas Development Institute.

New books, which cover a wide range of topics, including HIV and AIDS, gender and education, are collated in London, UK, and sent to NGOs across Sub-Saharan Africa and Palestine. Publications are also sent to public libraries which have ‘Development’ sections, and universities.

“It is often difficult to disseminate the latest research on development to those who need it most. This project offers a way of getting up to date material to the relevant people,” said Beth Murphy, Deputy Head of Operations at Book Aid International, who runs the project.

The ‘Books for Development’ project sends publications to NGOs, libraries and universities in 12 African countries, seven of which are members of the Commonwealth. These 12 countries are: Cameroon, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The project, which has been running since 2004, guarantees a collection of between 100 and 200 new titles for all recipient organisations every year.
