Secretary-General to visit Mauritius

29 November 2007

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will pay an official visit to Mauritius on 3 December 2007

He will meet President Anerood Jugnauth and Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The Secretary-General is expected to discuss some of the salient outcomes of the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, held in Kampala from 23 to 25 November 2007, such as ways to mitigate the effects of climate change; the need to reduce inequities in the global trading system and bring the Doha Development Round of trade negotiations to a successful conclusion; the promotion of respect and understanding to bridge differences and facilitate greater social harmony; and ways to transform Commonwealth societies economically, socially and politically. The talks are also expected to focus on the plight of the people of the Chagos archipelago, the bulk of whom currently reside in Mauritius.

This will be Mr McKinnon’s farewell visit to Mauritius in his present capacity. He returns to London on 4 December.
