CHOGM final communiqué released

25 November 2007

Commonwealth Heads of Government met in Kampala, Uganda between 23 and 25 November 2007 for their biennial meeting

The Commonwealth’s fundamental political values were restated by Heads of Government in a communiqué released on 25 November 2007.

Heads reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s commitment to young people, who play a key role in the processes of democratisation – through election monitoring, peace-making and community building.

Developing countries' World Trade Organization negotiating positions and African-Caribbean-Pacific countries' Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations with the European Union will both continue to be supported by the Commonwealth, the communiqué stated.

Continued commitment from the Commonwealth to human rights and ensuring that all member states ratify the two 1966 UN Covenants on civil/political and social/economic/cultutal rights were other important goals highlighted.

In the communiqué, issued at the close of CHOGM 2007, Heads agreed to meet in Trinidad and Tobago for CHOGM 2009.

Forty-eight of the 53 member states were represented at the meeting, which was officially opened by the Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
