This publication documents the work of non-governmental organisations working for women’s empowerment in Commonwealth Pacific countries.

It reflects the diversity of NGO work in Papua New Guinea, its autonomous province of Bougainville, Samoa and Tonga, drawing important lessons in areas of women’s empowerment, such as human rights education, entrepreneurial development and conflict resolution.

The book is the fourth and final in the Commonwealth Foundation’s ‘Lessons of Empowerment’ series and complements earlier volumes from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.

The Foundation initiated this project in 1998 to allow NGO leaders in developing countries to reflect on and document their experiences in development.

NGOs work to supplement public services, raise awareness of inequality, correct social imbalances, and empower marginalised people.
