Expresses appreciation for Brunei's support in technical assistance

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon held talks with HM Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, on 24 April 2007.

They spoke about Brunei's support of the Commonwealth's technical training programme, the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation (CFTC), which is administered by the Commonwealth Secretariat. The CFTC promotes capacity-building for government officials of member countries in various areas of socio-economic and political development.

The Secretary-General also briefed the Sultan on the Commonwealth Connects programme to narrow the gap between member countries which have access to information and communication technology and those which do not. He updated the Sultan on the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Uganda in November.

Discussions also focused on trade and development and the challenges faced by small states in the face of climate change.

Mr McKinnon also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, Pehin Lim Jock Seng, and the Deputy Minister of Communication, Dato Paduka Haji Yusof Haji Abdullah Hamid.

The Secretary-General, who is on a South-East Asian tour, will pay an official visit to Malaysia on 25-26 April.
