Commonwealth official says Caribbean single market and economy offers challenges and opportunities

Economic integration and freer movement of labour in the Caribbean will increase the competitiveness of the regional labour market while also creating more possibilities for employment, stated Henry Charles, Regional Director of the Commonwealth Youth Programme's Caribbean Centre.

Mr Charles, who was addressing prospective students at the University of Guyana's Career Day on 16 February 2007, said: "We live in a world which is characterised by ever more complex problems and challenges, yet it ironically offers unprecedented, immeasurable and interesting opportunities."

He stressed the importance of using acquired skills and knowledge to capitalise on opportunities.

"Real success and self-actualisation will only be achieved through steadfast commitment to professionalism, pursuit of excellence, sound moral principles and ethical behaviour, respect for fundamental human rights and a profound appreciation for your cultural and spiritual values."

Mr Charles also highlighted the career challenges being encountered by young people in the face of globalisation. This included the high levels of unemployment and poverty particularly in developing countries, the widening gap between rich and poor nations, as well as the disproportionate distribution of wealth among citizens.

However, he urged students to capitalise on the current technological revolution that has created opportunities for economic activity, social development and job creation, while the establishment of multilateral agreements on internationally acceptable standards and benchmarks is creating greater avenues for citizens to participate more meaningfully in the governance of their communities and societies.
