Public sector officials from across the Commonwealth are attending a workshop in Singapore aimed at tackling corruption and promoting transparency in governance.

The programme, taking place from 29 January to 9 February 2007, seeks to share Singapore’s experiences and best practice in this area.

“Corruption destroys the very fabric of society by affecting the economic development, competitiveness and credibility of the state,” said Richard Gold, Interim Director of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Governance and Institutional Development Division (GIDD), which is managing the workshop.

“Such workshops are therefore vital in strengthening transparency, accountability and good governance, all of which are fundamental values of the Commonwealth.”

The programme offers public servants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of anti-corruption issues and assists them in designing and implementing strategies to reduce corruption in their countries.

The participants will visit organisations such as the Corruption Practices Investigation Bureau, the Auditor-General’s Office and the Commercial Affairs Department in Singapore to observe examples of best practice.

The workshop is supported by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation and Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
