A workshop aimed at assisting Dominican officials in building capacity in public sector reform is being held in the country’s capital, Roseau.
The five-day programme, which commenced on 29 January 2007, is designed to expose its 40 or so participants to international good practices in public sector reform.
“A capable public sector is grounded in the principles of good governance,” said Richard Gold, Interim Director of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Governance and Institutional Development Division (GIDD), which is overseeing and participating in the workshop.
“Governments need a professional public service that is guided by shared values and that is competent in sustaining a comprehensive programme of public sector reform.”
The programme will focus on strategic change management and the development of a service quality culture. The goal is to help Dominican public servants adapt public sector reform approaches that are relevant to the country.
“The workshop will help the government innovate, improve citizen-focused service, reduce costs, increase efficiency and stimulate economic development,” stated John Wilkins, Public Sector Management Adviser and Head of GIDD’s Special Programme Section. He added that these reforms would support the Millennium Development Goals.
Funded by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation, the workshop is organised by the Secretariat, the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management, and the Government of Dominica.
