25 August 2006
Commonwealth Observers were deployed across Guyana from 25 August 2006. Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group who is based in the capital, Georgetown, visited several nearby locations in the lead-up to the elections that will take place on 28 August.
The other 10 observers and Commonwealth Secretariat support staff were deployed to all the districts in Guyana.
Ratu Epeli said: "Today, we spread across the country to see the end of the campaign, the final preparations for election day, and then the voting and the results process. We intend to meet as many people as we can, to see as much as we can and generally to get as full an impression of the process as possible.
"When we have seen all this, we will consider the various factors impinging on the credibility of the electoral process as a whole, assess whether, in our judgement, the conditions exist for a free expression of will by the electors and determine if the results of the elections reflect the wishes of the people."
