29 June 2006
New Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Regional Director for Asia.
Carrying out the mandates of the Sixth Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting which took place in The Bahamas in May 2006 will be the principal task of the new Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Regional Director for Asia, Raj Mishra.
This involves enhancing youth development work in poverty eradication, democracy and good governance, HIV/AIDS and gender equality.
Mr Mishra, who was formerly with UNAIDS and India’s Ministry of Youth and Sport, joined the CYP in June 2006. He told the Commonwealth News and Information Service during a visit to London, UK, on 26 June 2006 that apart from these key areas, he intends to promote sports, computer literacy and entrepreneurship, and look at new ways to encourage youth participation in various fields.
“I would like to promote greater awareness among the young people of today on global, regional and national issues because of the impact on their lives and future,” said Mr Mishra.
“I would also like to facilitate greater contact and interaction among the young people from Commonwealth Asia so that they can exchange ideas, views and experiences that will help to broaden their outlook. Volunteer work in another member country in the Asia region can be a useful way of networking among the young people as they learn more about how their peers live.”
Mr Mishra, 55, stated that he will continue to expand the Commonwealth Youth Credit Initiative to encourage entrepreneurship and greater use of computers to promote e-commerce besides improving access to communication, knowledge and information. He said the Ambassadors for Positive Living programme, which through young leaders promotes a greater understanding of HIV/AIDS transmission, is another area that will be given a boost by the CYP Asia Centre as a result of more community outreach programmes.
“I’ll also be working actively to establish new partnerships with local development agencies as well as strengthen existing partnerships. To make an impact on youth development, partnerships with various governments and organisations are critical,” stressed Mr Mishra.
