Singapore’s experience in fighting corruption and promoting good governance is a model for study by senior officials involved in anti-corruption activities from all over the Commonwealth. The officials are in Singapore from 24 April to 5 May 2006 for a training programme, ‘Better Governance –- Managing Corruption’. The programme is jointly organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat, through the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation, and the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs under its Singapore Co-operation Programme.

Dr Deryck Brown, Governance and Development Adviser in the Governance and Institutional Development Division of the Secretariat, said participants would be asked to design specific strategies to reduce corruption within their own countries, as a practical exercise, and explore different ways of tackling corruption, promoting transparency and advancing high ethical standards in governments. Other areas to be covered are the principles of governance, corruption control and Commonwealth experience and best practice in fighting corruption.

Participants attending the training programme include senior managers in public institutions involved in anti-corruption programmes, senior government policy advisers and senior officers of regulatory/oversight agencies including officials of Anti-Corruption Commissions and Bureaus.
