Statement by Commonwealth Small States to the 6th WTO Ministerial Conference

15 December 2005

Fifteen Commonwealth small states have sent a statement to world trade ministers urging reform in at least two areas of the multilateral trading system.

Pascal Lamy, Director-General, WTO, on the eve of Doha Round Talks
Reform would make the multilateral trading system "more amenable to the economic recovery, growth and development of small vulnerable economies", they said in joint statement to the trade ministers, who are currently meeting in Hong Kong for the World Trade Organisation talks. Two key areas are:

  • special and differential treatment provisions; and
  • the operationalisation of the principle of 'less than full reciprocity'.
