New Publication: 'Competing with the Best'

6 October 2005

Competing with the BestFaced with ever-changing demands in the tourism industry, the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) has produced a handbook on good practices through high quality services in Caribbean tourism. 'Competing with the Best: Good Human Resource Practices in Caribbean Tourism' has been published with the assistance of the Commonwealth Secretariat's Special Advisory Services Division.

This is the first in a series of annual handbooks by the CTO to promote efficient tourism management and development practices in the Caribbean. The publication illustrates the strategies needed to develop a professional tourism workforce to meet the emerging labour market, and the rapid changes and competitiveness in the tourism industry.

In her foreword, the Director of Human Resources at the CTO, Bonita Morgan, says: "The CTO's commitment is to investigate, compile and share home-grown examples of programmes, business strategies and initiatives with proven success. This will serve to highlight valuable approaches that can be shared with and adopted or adapted by other Caribbean tourism businesses and organisations."

This publication documents some of the best people-management practices from leading tourism-related industries. The focus is on effective human resource practices and challenges facing the tourism sector, while offering constructive tips to broaden and strengthen the skills base and expertise of those working in the tourism industry. It notes the need for training of tourism industry workers in foreign languages, food preparation and managerial skills to widen career opportunities and labour mobility.
