Commonwealth Public Executive Seminar in South Africa

4 August 2005

Senior Commonwealth civil servants are broadening their knowledge of public administration and management at a Senior Public Executive Seminar in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1 to 5 August 2005. This is the seventh annual seminar in the series organised by the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM). The Cape Town seminar is being held in co-operation with the University of Cape Town and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The CAPAM seminar brings together about 30 senior public officials who are involved in planning and implementing public sector renewal and reforms, human resource strategies, alternate service delivery services, and financial management and reform. The agenda includes examination and discussion of the experiences of Canada, Fiji Islands, Lesotho, South Africa, and Trinidad and Tobago on governance issues and best practices, challenges and constraints in public service management.

"The programme directly responds to the issues public sector leaders are facing today," said Gillian Mason, CAPAM's Executive Director. "Across the Commonwealth, governments are focused on improving service delivery, ensuring accountability, and developing the competencies needed to meet changing needs and demands. This seminar addresses those issues, and more."

Course director Denis Ives, former Public Service Commissioner of Australia, and a team of international and regional experts are presenting strategic and practical sessions on: good governance in the public sector; performance management and accountability; human resource management; service delivery; and improving the political-administrative interface.
