Commonwealth documents from 1974 released to the public

The Commonwealth Secretariat has placed a range of formerly classified records in the public domain under its 30-year rule. A total of 143 records, containing documents dating from 1974 and earlier, have been added to those already available to all those interested in Commonwealth affairs.

This is the ninth consecutive year that records have been made public.

Notable subjects covered by the records include:

 

  • Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Ottawa, 1973
  • Commonwealth Senior Officials Meeting, London, 1974
  • Grenada: membership of the Commonwealth
  • Pakistan: withdrawal from the Commonwealth, 1972
  • Cyprus: political situation
  • South Africa: arms sales, Anti-Apartheid Movement

The papers include material from the Office of the first Commonwealth Secretary-General, Arnold Smith (1965-75). Specific subjects include:

  • Commonwealth Finance Ministers' Meeting, Ottawa, 1974
  • 4th Commonwealth Medical Conference, Sri Lanka, 1974
  • Commonwealth Senior Officials Meeting, London, 1974
  • Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation
  • Official visits to Nigeria, Canada, Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya and Ghana
