Asia Regional Consultation on`Youth Enterprise Development in Tourism Sector' - 5th to 11th February 2005.
In its efforts to promote employment opportunities for young people in the tourism industry, the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Asia Centre plans to develop a trainer's manual on youth enterprise development in the tourism sector.

Hassan Shifau, Programme Manager at the CYP Asia Centre, said: "This manual is a result of a series of regional and national-level consultations to explore the possibilities of tourism for youth entrepreneurship. We will also be conducting a study on the various sub-sectors and auxiliary businesses of the tourism industry."

In collaboration with India's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the CYP Asia Centre organised a regional consultation in February 2005 on 'Youth Enterprise Development in the Tourism Sector' in Jaisalmer, and a national training workshop on 'Youth Enterprise Development in Tourism' in Goa.

Young people at these workshops recommended a partnership between the government, private sector and the community in the tourism industry to develop and increase accessibility for young people to train at institutes. The workshops appear to have triggered interest in the vast tourism sector among young people and representatives of governments, non-governmental organisations and civil society. CYP Asia Centre expects a host of emerging opportunities for young people in the tourism industry, including the involvement of youth in reviving and sustaining traditional skills, crafts and performances. The recommendations made at the workshops are seen to encourage enterprise development and generate employment.
