Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group to meet in London

8 February 2005

CMAGCommonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon announced today that following consultations with Ministers, the next meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) will take place at Marlborough House in London on 10-11 February 2005.

This will be the third meeting of CMAG after its reconstitution by Commonwealth Heads of Government in Abuja, Nigeria, in December 2003. The Group's current members are the Foreign Ministers of Nigeria (Chairman), The Bahamas (Vice Chairman), Canada, India, Lesotho, Malta, Samoa, Sri Lanka and the United Republic of Tanzania.

CMAG will consider the situation in Pakistan, which remains on the Group's agenda since the lifting in May 2004 of its suspension from the councils of the Commonwealth.

Note to Editors:

The meeting will be followed by a Press Conference at Marlborough House on Friday 11 February 2005 in the early afternoon (time to be confirmed).

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) was established by Commonwealth Heads of Government to deal with serious or persistent violations of the Harare Declaration, which outlines the Commonwealth's fundamental political values. This will be the 25th meeting of CMAG since its establishment in 1995. The Group's last meeting was held in New York in September 2004. CMAG usually meets twice a year to consider developments in the countries on its agenda.
