New Publication: ‘The Plain Language Guide To The World Summit On Sustainable Development’

20 January 2005

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2002 resulted in the 54-page Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), which outlines government priorities and commitments. While impacting on the lives of millions, the JPOI will be easily understood only by a relatively small group of policy-makers and specialists.

'The Plain Language Guide to the World Summit on Sustainable Development' aims to help the lay person to understand the agreement and practical action on the commitments. It is a resource book for those working in community groups, business, local government, central government departments, regional institutions and general readers across the international community.

The guide is designed to make the decisions of the WSSD available and comprehensible to as wide an audience as possible. It will be particularly useful to those who were not centrally involved in the negotiations, but who wish to take forward action on sustainable development in their own areas and in partnership with other groups.

'The Plain Language Guide to the World Summit on Sustainable Development', by Janet R Strachan, Georgina Ayre, Jan McHarry and Rosalie Callway, is a Stakeholder Forum/Earthscan/Commonwealth Secretariat publication.
