Mauritius
Mauritius hosted the International Meeting on Small Island States.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon participated in a meeting in Mauritius with the Secretaries-General of the Caribbean Community, the Pacific Islands Forum and the Indian Ocean Commission on 13 January 2005. They met on the sidelines of the International Meeting on Small Island States.

At the meeting with the Secretaries-General, they discussed issues related to the vulnerability of small island developing states. In particular, they signed a Declaration committing themselves to work together to strengthen natural disaster alert systems. To this end, they agreed to convene a meeting of technical experts in March 2005 and to meet again in July 2005 to review progress.

The Secretaries-General also discussed the current state of world trade negotiations and noted with approval the variety of measures proposed in the Commonwealth to give political momentum to the World Trade Organisation negotiations in 2005.

Mr McKinnon met with the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The issues discussed included the co-ordinated responses to natural disasters, collaborative post-conflict projects in northern Uganda and Commonwealth Good Offices activities.

The Secretary-General later held talks with the Prime Minister of Mauritius Paul Berenger. In Mr McKinnon's discussions with other heads of government, he emphasized the role and range of Commonwealth technical assistance available. He briefed leaders on plans for the Malta Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November this year and brought them up to date on Commonwealth activities in general.
