Mr John Brumby, MP launched the advertising campaign for the games in the UK.
"The Commonwealth Games provide a focal point for the Commonwealth brand. When many people think of the Commonwealth, especially the young, the first thing they will think of is the Commonwealth Games," said Secretary-General Don McKinnon.

Speaking at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Reception at the Australian High Commission in London, UK, on 22 November 2004, Mr McKinnon stated: "Melbourne 2006 will be a hugely exciting event; a celebration of Commonwealth excellence and one which will highlight the spirit of friendship that runs through the Commonwealth. The Melbourne Games will be a celebration of our diversity and also of what brings us together: a common sense of purpose, common values, common aspirations."

The 18th Commonwealth Games will be held in Melbourne, Australia, from 15 to 26 March 2006.

The reception was organised by the Australian High Commission in London to coincide with a visit by John Brumby, Member of Parliament and Treasurer for the State of Victoria, Australia. Mr Brumby is in addition the Minister for Innovation and Minister for State and Regional Development. The event was also attended by the UK's Minister for Sport and Tourism, Richard Caborn, and Australia's High Commissioner to the UK, Michael L'Estrange.

The Secretary-General said that sport can play a big role in the development of young people's lives. "It can inspire them, provide them with role models and give them confidence that they can change their own lives and make a difference in the lives of others."

Mr Brumby stated that the Games would increase international visitor numbers. He said: "Our Government is committed to maximising the economic benefits created through the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. We are anticipating up to 40,000 international and 50,000 inter-state visitors."

On 23 November, Mr Brumby launched an advertising campaign in the UK, with London taxis emblazoned with the famous 'Twelve Apostles' rock formations of Victoria's Coast.
