The two Secretaries-General discussed the progress of the Doha round of trade talks and the Millennium Development Goals.

They also reaffirmed the benefits of the Commonwealth and the United Nations continuing to work closely together to support global progress in economic development, free and fair trade, peace, good governance, democracy, human rights, health and education. Both organisations see collective decision-making as crucial in finding solutions to problems that affect all citizens of an increasingly interdependent world.

Mr McKinnon briefed Mr Annan about the Commonwealth's work on democracy and the forthcoming Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting which takes place 28-29 September 2004 in St Kitts and Nevis.

Mr McKinnon was on his way to the meeting. This will be his first visit to the Caribbean since the recent hurricanes, which led to loss of life and massive devastation of property on several islands. The Commonwealth Secretary-General meets the United Nations Secretary-General at least once a year.
