The Commonwealth Secretariat launches new video on promoting human rights in the Commonwealth

The Commonwealth Secretariat’s Human Rights Unit has launched a new video - Human Rights: More than Words - to commemorate Human Rights Day on Friday, 10 December.

The video, which is available in signed and subtitled versions, features staff from the Commonwealth Secretariat talking about individual human rights and how the organisation works to promote and increase respect for human rights.

Dr Purna Sen, Head of the Human Rights Unit (HRU) of the Secretariat, said: “Human rights shape our world – a world in which every person should be able to live in dignity and to know equality. The film shows that human rights is part of every aspect of the Secretariat’s work, of government’s work and of our lives.”

The film will be shown around the Commonwealth to inform policy-makers in areas such as economic development, trade, rule of law, health, education, etc, about how their work impacts on the human rights of citizens.

The Human Rights Unit aims to increase awareness of and respect for human rights in the Commonwealth by: assisting in the adoption and implementation of international standards on human rights by member states; and strengthening the human rights understanding and capacity in government, in national human rights institutions and in civil society. HRU also raises awareness about human rights standards and good practice through publications and activities.

The Commonwealth Secretariat will be celebrating Human Rights Day 2010 under the theme, 'The rights of persons with disabilities'. The Secretariat is proud to launch this film as the first Secretariat video in a format accessible to deaf people.
