Secretary-General meets Fiji Prime Minister

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon holds talks with Fiji Islands Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon held talks with Fiji Islands Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase in Nadi on 25 October 2006 in the wings of the Pacific Islands Forum Summit.

They discussed the success of the Commonwealth Observer Group, which had been present in Fiji in March this year for the country’s general election, and the establishment of a multi-party government in Fiji Islands that reflects the diversity of its society.

Ratification of two UN conventions – the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights – were also discussed. The Secretary-General stressed the importance of ratifiying these two international conventions, which have been in force for 40 years, to safeguard the fundamental human rights of Fiji Islanders.
