This collection of specially commissioned articles from world-renowned experts explores current trends in gender and addresses the 8th Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting (8WAMM) theme of ‘Financing Gender Equality for Development and Democracy’.
It discusses the key areas highlighted in the 2005-2015 Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality. The Plan reinforces the Commonwealth’s commitment to the Millennium Development Goals.

The book was launched at 8WAMM held in Uganda from 11 to 14 June 2007. It provides an account of government achievements in promoting gender equality and also records the advances of women from the mid-1990s to 2007.
It also shows the work of Commonwealth member countries and highlights country profiles which will enable policy-makers, development practitioners and partner organisations to build on achievements and learn from the challenges encountered.
