New publication: ‘An Annotated Bibliography on Gender in Secondary Education’

4 April 2007

The publication lists research from selected Commonwealth countries

This annotated bibliography published by the Commonwealth Secretariat brings together the currently available documentation on gender and education in five countries namely -- Ghana, Kenya, India, Nigeria and Pakistan -- with special emphasis on secondary education.

The publication should be useful to researchers, policy-makers, planners, teacher educators, government and non-government education managers, as well as activists in this field.

According Jyotsna Jha, editor of the bibliography, “Women’s education is a vital factor in helping them to strengthen their self-reliance, promote access to institutions of governance, access markets, labour and employment opportunities.

“Gender equality in education also has a wide ranging and significant impact on general well being in terms of increased economic and political participation on one hand, and improved health and environmental status on the other.”

Ms Jha argues that secondary education is a critical stage as it prepares students either for joining the work force or for higher education.

The bibliography includes both published and unpublished titles, from the United Nations, other multilateral agencies, NGOs, and research institutions. Where possible the location or source of the particular entry is identified to help readers source the original document.

One of the important features of the publication is that the reading gives a good picture of the scenario regarding gender disparities in post-primary education and its various dimensions existing in a particular country.
