New Publication: 'Managing Finance and External Relations in South African Schools'

17 November 2005

Managing Finance and External RelationsThe publication 'Managing Finance and External Relations in South African Schools' analyses the development of the country's integrated school system and the promotion of equal opportunities for children and young people. This is carried out through a funding model that provides more money for schools serving disadvantaged communities. There are challenges such as the development of infrastructure and access to power, water and sanitation for thousands of schools in South Africa.

Addressing many of the problems faced by school leaders provides the context for this book. Despite inherited difficulties principals, school management teams and governing bodies have to manage the situations for the benefit of learners, parents and the wider community.

Edited by Lesley Anderson, Director of Postgraduate Professional Development and Senior Lecturer at the Open University, and Jacky Lumby, Professor of Education Leadership and Director of Research at the University of Lincoln, the publication is aimed at developing a body of literature relevant to school management while at the same time integrating the best of theory, research and practice.

Drawing on research from a range of South African schools, this publication is the fourth volume in the series on 'Managing South African Schools'. The four volumes provide guidelines for educators and managers seeking to improve their skills and qualifications. This latest volume focuses on resources for schooling; management styles and their impact on financial and resource management; generating school funds; budgeting; and using resources for improvement to schools. It also examines the management of external relations, community relations, marketing and accountability in the education system.

Readers will better understand how school resources and external relations can be managed for improvement and effectiveness.
