Sri Lanka Takes Professional Services Global
More than 100 people from professional services associations and government ministries services attended the launch ceremony in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.
A marketing strategy aimed at promoting Sri Lanka's professional services abroad was launched in Colombo on 2 November 2005 by the Sri Lankan Export Development Board with the assistance of the Commonwealth Secretariat. More than 100 people from professional services associations and government ministries services attended the launch ceremony in the Sri Lankan capital, where the final report of the project was handed over to the Minister of Advanced Technology and National Enterprise Development, Rohitha Bogollagama, by Commonwealth Secretariat Trade Adviser Andrew Satney.

The report, funded by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation, outlines a functional services policy framework and strategic programme to develop the export of selected professional services sectors in Sri Lanka. The three-year national strategy will target services markets in the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates, which are reliant on outsourcing services. A supply-side study was conducted in April this year to determine the availability of the professional services sub-sectors; which sub-sectors were ready for export; and ways to develop export-readiness.

Mr Satney said the project has assisted the Government of Sri Lanka to evaluate its level of professional services and the comparative advantage of each sub-sector. The report identified the following priority areas: accountancy services, legal services, construction-related services such as engineering, architecture and surveying, and information technology and software development services.

According to Mr Satney the trade in global services is valued at over US$2.5 trillion. This, he said, underscores the economic and commercial significance of the services sector.
