Commonwealth Observer Group issues arrival statement

Election Observers from the Commonwealth started their work in Tanzania with a call for the polls to be conducted in a peaceful, transparent and credible manner. The elections are scheduled to be held on 31 October 2010.

Addressing the press in the country’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, on 25 October, the chair of the observers, Paul East, the former Attorney-General, of New Zealand said that: “Our expectation is that the journey of democratic consolidation will continue with these elections and confirm Tanzania as one of the Commonwealth’s stable and progressive democracies.”

He added: “All eyes are focussed on Tanzania.”
