Stormy skies over Nuku'alofa, Tonga, the scene of riots which have caused the deaths of at least six people and the destruction of public and private property.

McKinnon condemns death and destruction in Tonga

17 November 2006

No justification for the actions of those who have caused death, injury and loss, Commonwealth Secretary-General says

"I condemn the actions of those who have caused the deaths of at least six people and the destruction of public and private property in the Kingdom of Tonga this week. On behalf of the Commonwealth, I extend our deepest condolences and sincerest sympathy to those who grieve and have suffered loss," Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon said on 17 November 2006.

"There can be no justification for the actions of those who have caused death, injury and loss. I hope that those who incited and participated in these unacceptable events will not only reflect on the ultimate senselessness of their actions, but will also be brought to justice so that the rule of law prevails in Tonga.

"These developments are particularly unfortunate as the Kingdom has just concluded its official mourning following the death of the late King, and the Kingdom is also already on a clear path leading to fundamental political reforms which should benefit all in Tonga.

"Sustainable political reform must be supported by all people in the Kingdom. It must be addressed in a calm and constructive manner, and with patience. The report submitted by the National Committee on Political Reform as well as the recent statement by Prime Minister Sevele on 19 October 2006 allow political reform to be taken forward in a measured and reasoned way.

"There are also those who do not have access to employment opportunities based on sustained economic growth in Tonga, but this will not be advanced by destroying the infrastructure and confidence of foreign investors that Tonga needs.

"I welcome the public statement of the Pacific Islands Forum Chair, with which I associate the Commonwealth. I also welcome the practical support being given by Tonga's neighbours in response to requests for assistance.

"For our part, the Commonwealth is prepared to consider any requests for immediate assistance and will also continue over the longer term to support political reform and economic development to the benefit of all in the Kingdom.

"The Commonwealth stands in total solidarity with His Majesty King Siaosi Tupou V, Prime Minister Sevele and his Government, and the Parliament of Tonga at this difficult time."
