Maldives election an opportunity to strengthen democracy

Observer Group chairperson issues arrival statement

In a statement released on 2 October, 2008, Owen Arthur, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group to the Maldives election, said that it was "an opportunity to build on the experiences of the 2005 Majlis elections and the 2007 referendum" and provided a chance "to take a significant step forward in strengthening the country’s democracy."

The Presidential Election scheduled for 8 October is the first to be held under the recently ratified Constitution and is also the country’s first multi-party election.

The Commonwealth Observer Group will observe and report on the organisation and conduct of the Presidential election.
