H.E Bharrat Jagdeo, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana has formally expressed his government's support for the establishment of the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre (CYPCC) as the Commonwealth Centre of Excellence for Youth Work, Education and Training.
The President and Regional Director also agreed to a follow up meeting to discuss the finalization of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Guyana and Commonwealth Secretariat.
The Regional Director took the opportunity to convey expressions of gratitude on behalf of the Commonwealth Secretary General and Director of the Commonwealth Youth Affairs Division to the Government and people of Guyana for their invaluable support to the CYP over the last three decades.
The follow-up meeting will also include Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony and will explore further areas of cooperation between the CYP and Government.
President Jagdeo was one of a select group of leaders that met with youth leaders to discuss issues related to youth development during the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Kampala, Uganda in November 2007.
CYPCC has had a long and fruitful relationship with the people of Guyana through its local partner the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and has been involved a number of initiatives including facilitating training for youth development professionals at the Kuru Kuru training facility; collaboration with local education institutions to offer diploma and certificate courses in youth development work; and provision of technical and resource support to a number of local youth development agencies and groups.
