Maldives Statement by the Special Envoy

18 February 2013

The Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Sir Donald McKinnon, said today that he was monitoring recent developments in Maldives closely.

Sir Don called for calm and restraint and for the promotion of a more tolerant environment in Maldives.

“Following the events of last year, it is important that the people of Maldives now move on from the past and look forward. The focus at this point must be on ensuring free, fair and inclusive Presidential elections in 2013.

“The international community expects all Maldivians to play a positive role in ensuring there is a conducive environment for credible and peaceful elections.”

Sir Don reiterated the Secretary-General’s recent comments that, for the elections to be genuine and inclusive, the chosen candidates of political parties should be able to contest the elections freely on a level playing field.

Sir Don urged that work on election preparations be prioritised, and noted the willingness of the Commonwealth and other international partners to assist with this process.
