Imagine the year is 2049. What would the Commonwealth look like on its 100th birthday?
The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) has launched a competition for young people aged under 25 as part of the Commonwealth Conversation, a global consultation on the future direction of the association.
Interested applicants are asked to imagine the year is 2049 and that they occupy the post of Commonwealth Secretary-General. On one piece of paper, they should write or draw their response to the question: “What would your Commonwealth look like and do?”
Over half of the 2 billion people in the Commonwealth are aged 25 or under.
Entrants should consider what international issues will be the Commonwealth’s priorities and how they will be tackled, as well as who will be in the association. They may wish to consider who will run the Commonwealth and from where.
“We are promoting the competition as the youth engagement aspect of the Conversation,” explained Zoë Ware, Commonwealth Affairs Manager at the RCS. “It is a great way to engage young people in thinking about the future of the Commonwealth, especially with CHOGM in the news in the next few weeks.”
The winner of the youth competition will receive £200 sterling in Amazon.com vouchers. Second and third prize winners will each receive £100 and £50 in vouchers respectively.
Responses, which should be emailed to mycommonwealth@thercs.org, must be submitted by 31 December 2009.

The Commonwealth Conversation, launched in July 2009 by the Royal Commonwealth Society, is a major consultation seeking to capture the opinions and thoughts of people across the 53-country association. A report of its emerging findings will be presented at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Trinidad and Tobago later this month.
Well, I'm 15, and in 2049 I would like my Commonwealth to look the somewhat the same, with a monarch as its head etc, however I would like it to play a bit more of a role, and achieve more and more.
It's a good way to get the younger ones involved in Common Wealth Issues. I wish it comes annually with different topics for them to keep their brains busy with regards to the Common Wealth.
