Commonwealth officials discuss CHOGM themes, communiqué

9 October 2007

Main issue on the agenda is draft CHOGM communique

Senior Commonwealth officials met in London on Tuesday to review the agenda and issues to be discussed by leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to be held in Kampala, Uganda, next month.

The meeting, known as the 'Committee of the Whole' and chaired by Uganda's Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ambassador James Mugume, will also discuss the text of a Communiqué on matters of Commonwealth interest to be presented to leaders at the Uganda meeting.

On 8 October 2007 Ambassador Mugume chaired a meeting between the Committee of the Whole and civil society. Civil society officials noted in their statement issued at the meeting that they were pleased that climate change had been identified as a major issue for the Kampala CHOGM.

"Failure to address climate change has far-reaching ramifications, including for the global Millennium Development Goals … and the impact on gender, health, and environmental issues," the civil society statement said.
