The phenomenon of boys’ underachievement in terms of participation and performance has become an issue in many Commonwealth countries
14 February 2007
Book takes a cross-regional approach to explore the causes and policy implications of the trend
Gender disparity in education usually equates to disadvantaged girls. Although this continues to be the case in many places, the phenomenon of boys' underachievement - in terms of participation and performance - has become an issue in many countries.
This book - authored by Commonwealth Secretariat Education Adviser Jyotsna Jha and Programme Officer Fatimah Kelleher - reviews the research on boys' underachievement and presents arguments that have been put forward to understand its causes.
The first time a truly cross-regional approach has been applied to the issue, the authors present new studies from Australia, Jamaica, Lesotho and Samoa and use that research to explore the causes and policy implications of the trend.
The book will interest education policy-makers and analysts concerned to ensure gender equality in school education.
